Best Adventure Activities in Grand Teton Region
For those looking for an adrenaline rush, think about rafting down a raging river, biking along the extensive pathways in the area, hopping on the back of a horse, rock climbing the rugged terrain, or maybe trying it all!
White Water Rafting
Rafting near the Grand Tetons is a popular activity because of the routes that are perfect for beginners. There is no shortage of rafting companies in the Jackson area, looking to give you the best experience on the Snake River, and other nearby rafting rivers. Highly rated companies include Dave Hansen Whitewater, Jackson Hole Whitewater, and Lewis & Clark River Expeditions.
For those who want the river experience, but not the adrenaline rush, consider a float trip instead. You only travel through peaceful waters and still get to enjoy the majesty of the river. The above whitewater groups also offer scenic float tours if that is preferred.
Bike the Grand Teton Pathway
You can easily bike from Jackson all the way to Jenny Lake using the Grand Teton Pathway – a mixed-use path that keeps users safe from the dangers of sharing the road with vehicles. Parts of the pathway are closed at certain periods for wildlife migration. Check out this map of the pathway system that extends into other areas of Teton County, WY.
If you’re looking to rent bikes, try out Wheel Wranglers which has a wide selection of bike types, including e-bikes, and offers bike delivery to your lodging.
Horseback Riding
Enjoy a true Western experience by riding horseback through the park. Grand Teton Lodge Company offers rides at two different locations within the park. While it is not a cheap activity, the prices here are competitive and the location is easy to reach within the park.
There are several other options outside the park that include half-day, full-day, and dining package rides. The prices are much higher, but they may be a better fit depending on what experience you are looking for. Check out Willow Creek Horseback Rides about 45 minutes south of the park. Closer to Jackson is Spring Creek Ranch, which has decent pricing and short and long-ride options.
Rock Climbing
There are plenty of climbing routes to explore in Grand Teton, and guided excursions are available for expert climbers and beginners alike. Consider Exum Mountain Guides and Jackson Mountain Guides for a guided adventure, both of which receive excellent reviews.
Best Family-Friendly Hikes in Grand Teton
Hiking is one of the best things to do in Grand Teton if you want to experience its beauty firsthand. With hikes for every skill level, make sure to plan time in your itinerary for some or all of the following:
Hidden Falls: Easy
We took a boat shuttle over Jenny Lake to get to the trailhead, but you can also skip the boat and walk the whole way. To be honest, even with the shortened hike it felt a little longer than .6 miles to get to the falls, but once we got there, it was totally worth it. Bring some snacks or a picnic lunch to enjoy before heading onward to Inspiration Point and beyond, or making your way back to the boat dock. (Or hike back to the Jenny Lake parking lot if you want to keep moving!). Using the boat shuttle was perfect for our large family that included toddlers, kids, teens, parents, and grandparents.
Length: 4.9 mi/1.1 mi with boat
Type: Out and back
Elevation: 620 ft/300 ft.
Inspiration Point: Moderate
You can easily tag on the hike up to Inspiration Point from your hike to Hidden Falls. If you want to see the views but are not sure of your stamina, take the boat across the lake. This will shave off some of your time and effort getting to Hidden Falls, and subsequently, Inspiration Point.
Length: 5.7 miles/1.8 mi with boat shuttle
Type: Out and Back
Elevation Gain: 870/550 ft
Moose Ponds Trail: Easy to Moderate
While spotting a moose isn’t guaranteed, as the name implies there are moose that frequent the area, as well as other wildlife. You can do the entire loop, or just head to the first pond (counterclockwise direction) and turn around. Make sure to give all creatures a wide birth for your safety and theirs.
Length: 3.2 miles
Type: Loop
Elevation Gain: 155 ft
Best Low-Activity Stops in Grand Teton
For those looking to see the sites, but take it easy, these stops are the perfect way to take in the beauty and save the wear and tear on your body.
Jenny Lake Viewing Area
Just a short walk from the parking lot, you can snag a bench or sit along the rock wall and let the beauty of the Tetons soak in. Even in the middle of wildfire season with limited visibility, this stop made me fall in love with the park. Vehicle parking can be difficult during peak seasons and times but loop around until you find a spot and have kids keep track of the different license plates to pass the time.
Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle
If you are a nature lover, but not big into hiking or have physical limitations that prevent you from too much activity, consider just taking a round-trip journey on the Jenny Lake Shuttle. Enjoy the view from both sides of the lake, exit and explore near the dock, and take the next return shuttle 10-15 minutes later. Be prepared to wait in line a bit during peak season, and be prepared to purchase tickets – they run $12-20 for a round-trip ticket.
Oxbow Bend Overlook
This is a popular spot for those wanting to capture the perfect sunrise and sunset, but it is beautiful at all times of the day. Only a short walk from the parking lot (that might be busy), it is a great choice for those who don’t want a strenuous hike, but still want to enjoy Grand Teton’s beauty.
Moulton Barn
An easy walk to a spectacular barn built in the early 1900s. Enjoy an iconic view and snap some photos that encapsulate an era of US Western history and tradition.
