Finding the Right PLACE

When choosing a destination for your family, it’s important to consider the phrase “PLACE”:

P – Price

L – Length

A – Age

C – Car or Plane (Transportation)

E – Entertainment

Price

Your travel budget, which we discuss in more detail here and here, is probably the biggest factor in determining where you will be traveling. If you’re working with a smaller budget (roughly $50 a person a day or less), you will automatically eliminate more costly options. With a larger budget, your options are still quite varied. So if you’re having a hard time figuring the best family vacation spot, start with the budget and go from there. If you’re having a hard time saving for travel, read this post on how to grow your travel budget.

Length

Determine how long your trip is going to be. If you are only going to be able to take five days off of work and/or school, then jetting to Paris may not be worth it for this trip. A quick weekend getaway will probably keep you within a four-six hour drive max, or a two-three hour flight. Remember, a couples getaway with longer travel times may be doable, but when bringing the whole family less is best when it comes to travel time.

Age

Each family is unique and there isn’t a one size fits all standard on where to take your kids when they are young. Think about your family members and consider which destinations are a good fit. Maybe there is a location you want to take your family to, but you know that they will enjoy it much more in three to five years. Also, consider places you want to make sure you take your children to while they are still school-aged and plan accordingly. The best family vacation spot now, may be different than what’s best later.

Car or Plane (Transportation)

Falling in with both budget and length, is transportation. If you are taking a road trip but only have seven days, skip the coast-to-coast expedition this time. You’d be driving for six of the seven days. Straight. However, a seven-day trip that includes a flight from Los Angeles to New York City and back could be doable with two travel days and five days to explore. Just always remember that special, ever-present budget.

Entertainment

Typically, members of families have varied interests. Seek out destinations where everyone can find something to enjoy. You don’t necessarily have to take a cruise with endless entertainment options but do try to find a place where each person can find something they enjoy. Consider creating a short list of locations and research activities available. Use that list and activities to see which would be the best bet for your unique family.

You Can’t Go Wrong

Our world is big, beautiful, and ready to be explored. With the right preparation, and more importantly attitude, any destination can become your family’s favorite vacation spot. While choosing a destination is a key decision of the travel planning process, always remember that the most important part of a family vacation is who you are with.
